My wife calls it “book world.”
When I started getting serious writing novels a few years ago, my wife would try and get my attention. I’d be spaced out, thinking about the latest part of my novel, whatever I was working on. I had to snap out of it and focus on our conversation. She’d say, “Are you in book world?”
I’d have to admit, yes, I was.
As an author, working on a rough draft doesn’t happen only when I’m sitting down at a desk or laptop. It also happens when I go to the store or eat dinner or work on something else. My mind works on the story.
Working on the rough draft for Shield of the King wasn’t any different. I stayed consistent, more difficult than you might think. I wanted to write more of a 50k word, shorter novel, but the story expanded to around 70k words. I didn’t want to rush through the good parts.
I have a loose outline by the time I start a rough draft. The main plot points and the main arc are worked out. I also know the theme, the message of the book. Love? Hate? Division? I call it the heart of the book. This heart of the book lets me write and discover the story as I go but always connect back to the theme.
Rough drafts can be a struggle, but they are super fun. And when I’m done, write THE END, I celebrate.
But the work is just beginning …
